"The
Jewel of the Valley"
In
1877, the Central and Southern Pacific Railway system was being built
from Goshen to Hanford and hopefully beyond to the central coast. The
Paymaster was asked to locate a town site along the spur that was to distribute
agriculture products statewide. Welcome to the site that James Madison
Hanford chose in 1877. Hanford was incorporated in 1891, at the same time,
citizen unrest increased in the western portion of Tulare County due to
the distance a person had to travel to the county seat to file documents.
Frank Blakely introduced a successful bill that splintered the county
of Kings from Tulare. As a result of the vote of nearly fifteen hundred
Tulare County residents on May 23, 1893, the separation became a reality.

"Oasis
in the Sun"
Avenal is the smallest
city of approximately 14,827 people. Avenal owes its origin to the discovery
of oil on Oct. 4, 1928. Avenal was the site of a "tent city"
as the boom started, but foresight made the boom orderly, so that by
1940 Avenal was the second largest town in Kings County with a population
of 4,600.
Growth continues
today to include a more diversified economy based on oil, agriculture,
and the service industry. In 1978, Avenal citizens voted to incorporate
and improve the quality of life for all Avenal residents. The presence
of the Avenal State Prison helps this rural community maintain economic
stability.

"A
Great Place to Raise a Family"
Incorporated
in 1914, the City of Corcoran is located in the heartland of California's
fertile San Joaquin Valley. Corcoran is a "small town" in
the best sense of the word, with its citizens working together on major
community projects. Corcoran has been built on a strong agriculture
base because it is located near one of the most remarkable geographic
features in the San Joaquin Valley, the Tulare Lake Basin, which is
the most fertile region in the world. Although Corcoran still bases
its economy on agriculture, the construction of two State Correctional
Facilities have created more stable employment for the residents of
Kings County.

The history of Hanford
dates back to 1876 when the town was originally surveyed. Hanford received
its name from J.M. Hanford, the paymaster of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
The settlement quickly grew into a bustling pioneer town with shops,
schools, hotels, saloons and churches.
The City of Hanford
was incorporated in 1891 in order to provide community service. Hanford
has had continuous population growth since its inception and has served
as the county seat for the County of Kings. Hanford's diverse population
and economy has allowed it to continue as a progressive community looking
beyond today and planning for tomorrow.

"There
is More in Lemoore"
The City of Lemoore
was incorporated on July 1, 1900. Lemoore is located 8 miles west of
Hanford and has served for many years as an agricultural service center
for grapes, raisins, grains, cotton, and livestock. Lemoore is a dynamic
city offering old-fashioned friendliness, economic prosperity and enviable
living environment. Truly, local residents can boast that "There
is More in Lemoore."
While striving to
preserve its farming tradition, the city has also attracted diverse
manufacturing, commercial enterprises and a Naval Air Station that supports
over 7,000 armed service personnel and their families. The addition
of an FA18 Squadron and infrastructure improvements to the Lemoore NAS
will continue to enhance the economy of Lemoore well into the future.
